In an inquiry-based learning environment, English serves as a gateway for exploration, creativity, and understanding. Teachers and students alike find pleasure in utilising English, valuing its dual role in functionality and development. It plays a crucial role in meaning construction, offering an intellectual framework that fosters conceptual growth and encourages critical thinking across all subject areas.
The English curriculum is structured into three segments: Speaking and Listening, Reading, and Writing. Students cultivate their interest in reading by engaging with grade-level appropriate texts and enhance their speaking skills through daily discussions, debates, and presentations. Additionally, there is an extended emphasis on the writing process by utilising selected U.K. National Curriculum standards. The class learning objectives are supported through the implementation of programs that include text-based books and online resources. In addition to reading materials that are provided by the school, students are also assessed regularly in reading, comprehension, and fluency by the Fountas & Pinnell Reading Benchmark Assessment System.
Mathematics serves as a universal language for students to comprehend the world. Students develop mathematical understanding through the construction of meaning at progressively abstract levels, beginning with the exploration of personal experiences.
The mathematics program focuses on applying mathematical concepts to real-world situations. Various methods are employed for practising and reviewing essential skills and knowledge, including number, measurement, statistics, algebra and shape and space, provided in various contexts. Students are prompted to articulate and discuss their mathematical reasoning in their own words. This expression of thoughts and strategies allows students to clarify their thinking and benefit from insights shared by others.
Information Technology is incorporated throughout all subjects and all relevant aspects of the curriculum. These tools facilitate student inquiry, personal agency, and critical thinking. Access to technology helps students make smart, ethical, and responsible choices. Digital hardware tools are provided to students, encouraging opportunities for research, peer collaboration, and presentation of work using Google Suite for Education. In today’s ever-changing technological environment, students require digital literacy to become empowered, lifelong learners and responsible digital citizens.
As part of our commitment to ‘internationalism’ and in celebration of our host country, all students are instructed in the Japanese language.
Japanese language classes are categorised into native (Kokugo) and non-native (Japanese as an Additional Language) speakers. Students in the Kokugo classes possess native-level spoken Japanese, with a curriculum focusing on reading, writing, speaking, listening, and Kanji for students in Grade 1 and above. A Japanese language textbook designated by the Japanese government is utilised and follows the same program as Japanese public elementary schools.
In the Japanese as an Additional Language (JAL) classes, students acquire useful vocabulary and phrases through engaging activities and cultural experiences. Depending on the students’ Japanese level, JAL students learn basic Kanji. Japanese lessons provide students with an understanding of Japan’s rich historical, natural, and cultural backgrounds, fostering an appreciation for their own home countries.
